Jefferson Square, named after its nearby park created in the 19th century, is rich with history. The Park was located close to the original Philadelphia Naval Shipyard at the foot of Federal Street. During the Civil War, the City of Philadelphia deeded the Park to the Union Army for use as a military encampment. Following the Civil War, the Park returned to the City. The Park has grand 150-year-old trees and old-style park benches that offer green space to stroll, relax, and visit with neighbors. The City Department of Recreation and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society maintain the Park. The Friends of Jefferson Square Park volunteer their time to organize free outdoor summer concerts and festivals that help make Jefferson Square Park a focal point of the community.
